Building Zeedyks to support sagebrush growth in southeastern Alberta

Check out our short video about meaningful restoration work we did this past summer!

Back in 2023, CEG facilitated Alberta Conservation Association’s (ACA) purchase of the Manyberries parcel in southeastern Alberta, with support from Mubadala and MBZF.

We were happy to return to the property in June 2024 with partners from ACA and the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) to construct Zeedyks — small rock structures — to support the growth of silver sagebrush in the area. Multiple Zeedyks were built along several erosion channels and will work in concert to retain moisture and topsoil to improve the restoration outcomes. They were seeded with silver sagebrush and winterfat, another low-growing shrub beneficial for greater sage-grouse.

We were heartened to see that lots of silver sagebrush seedlings had sprouted where they were seeded! These plants will be an important seed source for ongoing vegetation restoration efforts on the property.
