Habitat & Population Connectivity
CEG is using environmental mapping, animal behavior analyses, and simulation modeling to assess Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) movements and connectivity between Montana, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.
We are analyzing location information for Greater sage-grouse to quantify which landscape features are facilitating or impeding grouse movement. CEG and partners are mapping historical sagebrush ecosystem vegetation to characterize system stability. We are using sage-grouse location information and step-selection analyses to evaluate movement behaviors and movement constraints. Additionally, CEG is assessing the structural connectivity of sagebrush-associated vegetation, and creating a timeseries of maps to identify where vegetation connections have been lost among populations, and where there are opportunities to restore connected natural areas.
